Summit Point, WV – The D&N Motorsports team celebrated a momentous achievement today, clinching their first victory and securing a second podium finish in Round 13 of the US Touring Car Championship.
Behind the wheel of the No. 24 Saturn, Dennis Short embarked on an exhilarating race, positioned on the outside of the pole-winning Audi A4 as the engines roared to life at Summit Point Raceway, a challenging 2-mile circuit known for its twists and turns.
As the green flag waved, the Audi leapt ahead, demonstrating its powerful acceleration and expertly timed launch. In contrast, Short, navigating the intricacies of the standing start for the first time, lost several positions in the early rush. However, displaying remarkable determination, he executed a daring maneuver in turn five during the opening lap, quickly rejoining the battle for position and re-establishing himself among the frontrunners.
The relentless Audi remained just out of reach for several laps, compelling Short to settle into a rhythm likely to secure another second-place finish. Yet, fate took a turn on lap four as he emerged from the challenging turn nine, catching sight of the Audi appearing to falter. Seizing the golden opportunity, he maneuvered around the Audi, taking command of the race lead. A swift communication with his Crew Chief, Don Short, confirmed the good news— the Audi was heading into the pits, an unexpected twist to the race.
With steady hands and unwavering focus, Dennis maintained a consistent pace for the remainder of the race, guiding the No. 24 Saturn across the finish line. This triumphant moment marked not only the team’s inaugural win but also their second podium finish.
Round 13 concluded the East Coast series, leaving D&N Motorsports inspired and ready to embark on preparations for a full schedule in 2005.
DENNIS SHORT, OWNER/DRIVER NO. 24 SATURN SW2: “We didn’t want to win this way because the Audi was the superior car, but we will accept it nonetheless. This year, we couldn’t compete in as many races as we would have liked, but it still turned out to be a good season. I want to thank my family and crew for their unwavering support, and we look forward to next year. I would also like to thank Jeff Mishtawy for all his efforts in organizing these East Coast races.”
DON SHORT, CREW CHIEF NO. 24 SATURN SW2: “D&N Motorsports had a great weekend at Summit Point, with Dennis behind the wheel of the silver Saturn wagon. He drove a smart race and secured his first win of the season. I thank NASA Virginia for organizing a great weekend and keeping everything on schedule. They hosted a great party on Saturday night. I would also like to thank Jeff Mishtawy and his crew from Ohio for all their assistance. Although they are competitors, they generously offered suggestions and support as well. Great job, Dennis! Keep up the good work. We are looking forward to next season.”
